Conundrum! Solution! May 15 2014, 0 Comments
Wow, big response to our hiring blitz! We are inundated with resumes from stylists who are moving to Portland. It makes sense, Portland's a cultural hot spot right now, tons of people are moving here!
These seasoned stylists may have decades of experience, but no clients. As a commission salon our stylists are employees, they do not rent their chair. We also offer medical insurance and vacation benefits for our employees.
Plus, we have our New Talent graduates who have worked very hard for 7-12 months, working hard at the bottom of the totem pole and supporting every member of the team. They need to be tended, nurtured and grown on a daily basis.
As you can imagine, we must be very judicious about this kind of hire! How exciting, though, a stylist from another city, fresh talent + inspiration...? And we do get a new bridal party request every day, this summer's going to be nuts, we will need all hands on deck.
Now that we have a system in place--it only took us 16 years!--for the New Talent program for brand-spanking new stylists, we may turn our attention to Seasoned Stylists entering a new market.
Whether it's moms coming back to styling part time or the salon professionals who cannot escape the siren song of Portlandia--i's hard to start over. But you know who did exactly that? Urbaca's new owner, Daria Daniel.
