Hairdressers are a wonderfully creative bunch but it takes a specific skill set to become one of the 5% truly successful cosmetologists. Our benchmark of the top 5% would be a 6-figure stylist, as in you TAKE HOME 6 figures, not just do that dollar amount in services per year!
It takes talent, certainly, to achieve that kind of success. But as my old theater mentor Jon Jory used to say, "Talent and fifty cents will get you a cup of coffee." That was how long ago I heard this, a cup of coffee was only 2 quarters. Egad.
We've heard the word grit recently and there is a spirit of resiliency necessary to do this work. Day in and day out, guests will bring you their problems and expect you to perform miracles. See: Talent. Sometimes you will fail, and you will fail spectacularly--to learn from the experience and move forward takes grit. Not everyone has that.
I can tell you a group though, that inevitably has grit. Anyone who has graduated Urbaca's New Talent Hair Apprentice program. At Urbaca currently that is John, Jasmin, Chelsie, Laci, Gretchen, and Caitlyn. Each of these stylists started at the bottom with talent and grit and worked their way up to become the successful stylists they are today.
Our apprentice program is hard, but human. We expect you to show up not on time, but early. To have common sense and learn efficiently. To anticipate needs and multitask accordingly. To participate as part of the solution.
All you need to do then is add, time, talent and training and you'd be well on your way to your 6-figure income.
We are currently hiring for our next New Talent Apprentice Superstar. We should do a reality show for this, what do you think?

One of our salon mentors is KMS California's Global Programs Manager Alan Earnshaw. He stops in to see us every time he's in Portland and imparts us with wisdom from throughout the land.
Part of KMS California's philosophy is the essential importance of 10 minutes at the shower bowl. Nearly everyone's favorite part of salon service is shampoo, conditioning and massaging the hair and head.
One of the first things our apprentices learn here at Urbaca is how to give an amazing shampoo experience. Everyone has a slightly different technique, Gretchen and Tonya have more finger work while Caitlyn and John use pressure and points. Despite each stylist's variations, each has a dance, a responsive dance--with your head.
Yeah, a little weird. Have you tried it?
It works the same way during facials! Chakra energy balancing is all about relaxation, not only administering but teaching you simple techniques to relax yourself 365 days a year. : )
How do You relax in full?
Have you had a shampoo/blow dry style or facial at Urbaca? Describe your experience in one word as a comment on this blog or our Facebook Post and you'll be entered to win one of each. Drawing 7.25.14 PS. This round you can enter as many times as you like! Good luck!
Urbaca has three excellent make up artists on staff: Gretchen, Caitlyn + Ashley. We use Being True and Blinc cosmetics and YES we teach make up application classes and we're happy to do on-site services! : )
Here are some photos of our work:
As you can see, we LOVE working with Crystal Genes Photography
! This has been a taste of our wedding make up, we'll have some new boudoir work up soon! : )
What in the world does that mean, anyway?
There's a reason why Portland has its own tv show, why it's such a popular destination for folks to flock and move!
We love Portland too, Urbaca's been here over 16 years!
Like Portland, Urbaca is not the biggest, but there's something different + special going on here--which is why we've been featured in American Salon and In Style Hair magazines!
Our favorite aspects of Portland + your hair/skin appointment = Portland's Hair l Skin Experience!
Friendly: We're happy to see you!
Curious: Who are you? How may we be of service?
Unique: No cookie cutters here, just a consistently solid foundational skill set.
Community Minded: We work together each day as a team, sharing technical information and creating a cohesive experience for every guest. We help Portland not-for-profit organizations as often as we possibly can with hands-on volunteering and gift certificate donations.
Artisanal: We support the apprenticeship model as a teaching salon and strive to create authentic, artistic work. Our team includes photographers, filmmakers, artists, dancers, drummers, cooks, gardeners + world travelers. Creativity comes in handy, we are better able to problem-solve color corrections and troubling skin concerns!
Green: We offer ammonia free-hair color + organic facials, plus our house line, Okamura Farmacopia, is paraben, sulfate + cruelty free.
Welcoming: We're glad you're here!
Welcome to Urbaca!
