Oily Skin and Salicylic Acid

Anyone who has ever had a facial from me knows I love extractions and I love peels. Any time I use one of my professional salicylic acid peels in a facial I get the same response, “Oooh spicy!” It can be a little stingy but it helps the extraction process tremendously. We must be doing something right, because folks keep coming back and their skin is fairly transformed!

Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid used to tame acne because it dissolves excess oils, lightly exfoliating skin to help prevent future breakouts. Oily or combination skin types benefit most, but generally OTC home products are gentle enough to use for the occasional break out for most skin types (not sensitive).

I would start oily or combination skin types on a once a day/every other day program, adding or subtracting days as needed. Oily skin still needs to moisturize, I suggest a hydrating serum like SkinCeuticals Phyto Corrective Gel or HA Intensifier. Salicylic acid is an exfoliant, sunscreen is definitely required!

What’s the difference between salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide? Both are used to combat acne, benzoyl peroxide is more drying and used for pustules, it also kills acne causing bacteria. Salicylic acid is great for dislodging black heads and clogged pores because it gets rid of dead skin cells while dissolving oil.

Our best treatment for Acne or Oily skin types? A Three Peel Deal with Light Salicylic Peel and/or Advanced Peel Treatment can do wonders! A customized Power Facial is also an excellent start for power washing your pores.

Add home treatment of Clarifying Cleanser SkinCeuticals, Silymarin CF antioxidant serum, hydrating serum, Physical Fusion SPF 50 or Glo Skin Beauty Tinted Primer SPF 30 and you’re well on your way to fabulous skin!
